Thank Me Later
Introduction
Drake is one of the most polarizing artists of the 2010’s. He has impacted the genre of rap so much and has made it even more accessible to the masses. "Thank Me Later" manifests this beautifully. This astonishing album brings effortless beats, many quotable lines, and pure euphoria to your ears. Drake’s voice is so comforting and rides the beats so gracefully that it makes it impossible to not sing along. The album's production is one of the greatest I have ever heard making a very exciting listen especially because many of the songs have insane beat switches that totally change the vibe of the song. Drake also brings his signature confidence on "Thank Me Later" making it, arguably, the most well known and well received Drake album.
The Resistance
Drake explores the topic of changing his personality after fame in "The Resistance" generating very heartfelt lines that put you in Drake’s point of view. The production is spacey and dark really adding to the atmosphere of the track. As always Drake’s hooks are complimented by the drums beautifully, they give Drake a lot of room to push his thoughts and explore himself throughout the song. He wants to indulge in his newfound fame but the more he does the more he hurts the people he loves and cares about. Drake definitely accomplishes his goal of self-exploration on this track in fascinating ways. When listening to the song, you really get consumed by it, you feel like you’re in Drake’s world creating a strong bond between Drake and the listener.
Karaoke
Karaoke begins with heavy drums and a weird gunshot like crash that definitely shines through the mixing of the song creating a unique and live track. Drake opens up about his lovelife with the most comforting tone you will ever hear. The chorus features a mesmerizing synthesizer that compliments not only the drums but also Drake’s voice making an inseparable sound. Overall Karaoke shows a very subdued and chill side of Drake that I very much appreciate and is definitely needed throughout a full listen of the album.
Up All Night feat. Nicki Minaj
"Up All Night" is one of the greatest beats on a Drake song I have ever heard. Unfortunately, Drake’s subject matter isn't here. Let's be honest though, nobody comes to Drake for lyricism, we listen to Drake for his catchy hooks! But even in that respect I think Drake is lacking, the hook is mediocre at best. "Up All Night" is carried by the production from Boi-1da and a verse from Nicki Minaj. Nicki's verse is what you expect from her but it does have a couple funny bars. Aside from these minor inconveniences, the song would be a good song for any other artist in the 2010’s. But Drake isn't any other artist. Drake is one of the most influential artists of all time and because of that I expected more from this track.
Over
Drake’s breakout single "Over" is the first single I’ve ever heard by him. I still remember discovering it on 2k’s soundtrack when I was five. 11 years later, when the horns start blaring at the beginning of the track, this song still gives me goosebumps. Lyrically though, this song doesn't create a new path for Drake or even new topics for the listener to be entertained by. "Over" is what Drake does best, brag and make you laugh at comedic references and metaphors. From time to time you will have quotable bars, but most of the time Drake talks about how much women and money he has. Honestly, "Over" would be a lackluster track if it wasn't such a big reminder of my childhood.
Light Up feat. Jay Z
"Light Up" is an example of Drake and Jay rapping how Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen play basketball, with everything they've got. "Light Up" is the reason I hold Drake to such a high standard. I expect him to have countless quotable bars over a hard-knocking Boom Bap beat on every song he makes on every album he makes. It would honestly be hard for me to rank the top 10 bars in this song and the fact that Drake outrapped Jay Z! I mean that never happens. Whenever Jay is on a song, it becomes his song. Most of the time rappers are playing catch up with Jay but not Drake. Drake only worries about himself and does what he does best and he definitely delivers on this instrumental. Speaking of the drums, they will literally make you jump out of your seat. The first verse on the track is Drake riding the beat and handing out bars like it is nothing to him, and then when the chorus hits!!!! The beat switches so beautifully allowing Drake to bless the listener with his soft voice. Jay obviously delivers with his verse. I mean on the first line he uses a triple-entendre! "Light Up" is the brightest point on the track probably explaining the title. I just simply love listening to it.
Fancy feat. T.I.
Swizz Beats creates a remarkable beat by using a sample from Ace Spectrum’s “I don't want to play around”. Drake finally switches up the subject matter from misogyny to his appreciation for women up until one minute mark. Drake’s verse is surprisingly cohesive revolving around the main theme which I greatly enjoy. T.I. unsurprisingly has a more conservative view on women though it does slightly build on Drake’s first verse. Up until this point in the track, "Fancy" has been very upbeat with a lot of noise but at the end of the chorus, "Fancy" changes into an empty beat that compliments a seemingly introspective Drake. Sadly if you hear the lyrics, it is the same old sexist Drake we all love! The final two verses on the song deteriorates the work and progress Drake showed throughout the first verse. Although, in my opinion, the first verse is good enough to overcome or just skip the final two embarrassments.
Conclusion
“Thank Me Later” is my favorite Drake album even though I don’t think it is his best. Drake’s voice develops a lot more in future releases and pushes the boundaries a lot more too. Listening to “Thank Me Later” in 2021, it definitely sounds dated but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. This album has an all star lineup of features that contribute a lot to the project. If you’re going to listen to “Thank Me Later” you have to remember that it is a Drake album. You won't be getting lyrics or a very deep concept. Drake is going to give you the catchiest hooks you will ever hear on this album and make you laugh over and over with hilarious metaphors. “Thank Me Later” has probably the most-well known Hip-Hop tracks to non Hip-Hop fans. It is a mainstream take on hardcore rap and it was definitely needed in 2010 to forward the genre and top the charts. “Thank Me Later” is a must listen Rap album.
